Google Winning Against Apple In Phone Share
According to TechCrunch, in Q4’09, Android saw US market share gains of 4.3 points to command 7.1% of the smartphone market. This was the biggest single gain of any of the top five smartphone platforms. Apple stayed with 25% of the mobile market, while RIM’s Blackberries gained 1.7%, raising to 43%.
The overall smartphone market grew by 18%. Apple did gain users but as a rising tide lifts all boats, Apple’s lift was level with the increase in the overall market while a greater percentage of new users opted for the Android platform over iPhoneOS.
Overall, 42.7 million people in the U.S. owned a smartphone during the period, up 18 percent. So even though Apple’s relative share didn’t go anywhere, it still grew with the market. At the same time, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile dropped 4 points to 15.7% of the market and Palm dropped to 5.7%. This means that Google now commands a greater share of the mobile market than erstwhile leader Palm, the maker of the Treo.
