Happy Birthday YouTube

Happy birthday, YouTube. I find it hard to believe that it’s only been around for five years. Technically, it was “born” on February 14, 2005, but today is the fifth anniversary of the first upload of a video. I first found it after hearing it referenced in a late-2005 podcast of DiggNation. I had never heard of it and so I typed “utoob” into Google. I figured that was how the site would have spelled its name. And that is how I found YouTube.

The video is of YouTube co-founder, Jawed Karim, at the San Diego Zoo. It is only 19 seconds long. But since then, those 19 seconds have reshaped the world. Not just about videos of kittens, YouTube has fomented revolutions and changed the way governments function. It has led to transparency by giving voice to the voiceless. It has made politicians more accountable for what they say.

Happy birthday, YouTube. Thanks for changing the world.
