Social media survey: 50% of online women bought a product because of a social network in 2009

SheSpeaks‘ “Annual Social Media Study,” analyzed by eMarketer, shows women dramatically increased their social media participation in 2009. Specifically, social networking profile penetration climbed from 58% of online users in 2008 to 86% in 2009.

The study also found that the vast majority of online women had experience interacting with brands, with 80% saying they had become a fan of a product or brand on a social network.

Other findings from the study:

  • 72% of online women had learned about a new product through social media
  • 67% had commented about products
  • 50% had made an actual product purchase
